FURGCARRIL: Van adapted for highway maintenance lane closure operations

FURGCARRIL: Van adapted for highway maintenance lane closure operations

Equipment exists on the market for safely and automatically placing traffic cones. However, solutions for their removal are not satisfactorily developed, especially if a cone has been moved or knocked over. There are also manual systems, based on the safe positioning of an operative on a hydraulic platform located at the rear of the vehicle. The drawback of this system is that it heavily loads the rear axle of the vehicle and limits its use for other highway maintenance tasks. The technological advances presented by the FURGCARRIL project are based on the development of a vehicle adapted for the placement and removal of cones that facilitates and speeds up this task, as well as providing safety to the operatives. The system consists of the adaptation of a basic commercial vehicle to highway maintenance operations, equipping the body for a dual use: transport of material and placement and removal of cones for lane closures. The conversion is carried out quickly, increasing the efficiency of the vehicle. The cone placement and removal mode incorporates the necessary safety features for operatives.

Double loading platform for building sites

Double loading platform for building sites

The function of this upper-level materials loading platform is to minimise or eliminate fall-from-height risks created by the removal of safety railings when withdrawing crane forks, due to the lack of available space for unloading operations.

The company holds a Ministry of Industry model use licence which is attached to the TI certificate from EQA.

DETECTOR: Highway maintenance works area intrusion alarm

DETECTOR: Highway maintenance works area intrusion alarm

The project develops a vehicle intrusion detection and immediate warning system for personnel at risk during a highway maintenance operations lane closure. This is a laser system, comprising a sender unit, a receiver-warning unit and a second warning unit connected via Bluetooth to the receiver. (There can be as many second warning units connected via Bluetooth as you wish).

The system creates a laser beam, which activates the visual and audible alarms of the receiver and second warning units when the beam is broken. This provides a safety margin allowing road workers to get out of danger if a vehicle encroaches into the works area.

The sender unit is placed just after the direction signs of the lane closure lead-in taper and the receiver unit can be located up to 200 metres away, in front of the personnel protection vehicle. The second warning unit is positioned in the works area using a built-in magnet for fixing to crash barriers, sign posts or railings, etc. The system is of clear benefit in reducing the risk of accidents for personnel carrying out highway maintenance operations.
